Forensic Biology, Serology & DNA Fingerprinting

TFWF Biology section is equipped with sate of art instruments and experts are proficient in analysis of biological trace evidence analysis. ‘Forensic Biology’ is defined broadly as ‘the application of the science of biology to legal investigations’ and therefore covers human anatomy and physiology, organisms ranging from viruses to vertebrates and topics from murder to the trade in protected plant species.

Forensic serology is concerned with the analysis, identification, and individualization of body fluids and tissues, secretions, and excretions. Blood, semen, and saliva are the most frequently encountered types of samples but occasionally samples such as perspiration, urine, gastric contents, and faces may be examined for purposes of characterization.

Biological evidence is usually submitted to the laboratory in the form of dried stains on clothing or other materials retrieved from the scene, victim, or suspect. Control samples consisting of clean areas from the surface from which the suspected stains were obtained must be included in the analyses. Standard known samples consisting of victim and/or suspect blood are also utilized for comparative purposes.

DNA as a method to identify participants in a crime has been a rapid and relatively noncontroversial one. The judicial acceptance of various DNA technologies including mitochondrial DNA has been even more rapid and judicially accepted. DNA profiling has the potential to uniquely identify an individual from traces of body fluids, hairs or skin cells left at the scene or recovered from items related to the incident. However, if a DNA profile is made up of contributions from a number of individuals or from an unidentified body fluid or only a partial profile is obtained, and then the results may be open to reasonable interpretations. TFWF Biology Section deals with following types of examinations:-
  • Examination of Blood & Bloodstains
  • Examination of Other Body Fluids and Their Stains
  • Blood Groping and Origin Detection
  • Blood pattern analysis
  • Personal Identification of Human Body
  • Hair & Fiber Examination
  • Identification of Food Stuffs and Their Stains
  • Analyses of Paper
  • DNA Paternity Testing
  • DNA Fingerprinting
